The India Clean Air Summit 2023 focused on the linkage between clean air and SDGs
The fifth edition of the India Clean Air Summit — CSTEP’s flagship event highlighting air pollution — was held from 23 to 25 August in Bengaluru. The event focused on the implications of clean air on sustainable development goals and Mission LiFE. Funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, Clean Air Fund, and Open Philanthropy, ICAS 2023 included photography and poster-making competitions. The Centre for Air Pollution Studies at CSTEP collaborated with the Indian Aerosol Science and Technology Association for the event this year.
At the event, Dr Maria Neira, Director, Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health, WHO, urged India to take the lead on discussions on air quality management and health at COP28, to be held from 30 November to 12 December in Dubai. Dr P G Diwakar, ISRO Chair Professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies, highlighted India’s capabilities in resolving air pollution, mentioning strides made in geospatial technology and AI in monitoring air quality and achieving sustainable development goals. Ashish Tiwari, Secretary, Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of Uttar Pradesh, announced the state’s plans to develop clean air action plans based on micro airshed planning.
Over the years, the India Clean Air Summit has emerged as a platform for knowledge dissemination on various aspects of air pollution, bringing together scientists, community organisations, and policymakers to facilitate collaborative and comprehensive scientific solutions for tackling air pollution.
