Our study on satellite mapping of PM 2.5 reveals the big picture on air pollution in Delhi, Kanpur, and Bengaluru.
The Centre for Air Pollution Studies at CSTEP released a report assessing the pollution levels in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Kanpur through satellite mapping. The study shows significantly higher pollution in Delhi and Kanpur, compared to Bengaluru and identifies the hotspots.
During the panel discussion that followed the report launch, speakers highlighted the importance of non-conventional air pollution monitoring methods (such as satellite mapping and low-cost monitoring) to understand the big picture, considering the challenges of deploying a dense network of reference-grade monitoring instruments.
The study finds no major deviation in pollution levels in urban and peri-urban areas and emphasises the importance of including peri-urban areas in air pollution action plans.
